The Stork - bringer of babies, Spring, good luck & tourists!
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a huge wing flash by as I was getting out of the car in Kalloni! On top of the electricity pole there it was - the stork - proud as a beautiful bird can be! I pulled out my camera and started taking pictures and when I came back to street level a man dressed in a running suit all in black said, "that is the bird that brings babies!" The stork in it's glory signifies good luck, good parenting skills, the resurrection and spring! It is said that it brings the souls of babies out of the marshes where it lands. In ancient Greek mythology, "the stork was actually a symbol of stealing a baby and carrying it away. Gerana, a beautiful Queen of the Pygmies, was changed into a stork by Hera, one of the goddesses whom she had made angry. As a stork, Gerana tried to abduct her own child, Mopsus, whom she loved, but was constantly chased away by her former kin."
That stork - what an incredible thing to see. It also symbolizes and heralds the beginning of the tourist season and birding on this beautiful island we call Lesvos!
