Pelopheia 2014 - Poems, Art contests and Athletic Games!
Under an almost full moon with the balmy mountain air creating a beautiful atmosphere, I ventured off to the next village of Pelopi last night. My students that I teach english to were participating in an event called Pelopheia 2014. The event concluded the katekistika - (catechism) or religious studies that the Village of Pelopi children participated in all year.
Priest Theodoros and Mr. Nikos were the Masters of Ceremony which included each student performing their own poems in Greek to a packed cafenion. The children were composed and incorporated comedic theatrical performances. Next, Pelopheia 2014, awarded the children for their placement in their athletic games a sort of Olympic track game Pelopi style. The atmosphere was cheerful and the children were excited to receive their honors and gifts. Lastly, there was a drawing competition for Agios Lucas, which was celebrated yesterday and medals were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
Once the children received their honors and awards, the music and dancing began. The band from Mytilini were tight and utilized the violin and the bazooki to play traditional music from the island. The combination of the beautiful atmosphere with the Cafe Anthos, the talented musicians and the children dancing made Pelopheia 2014 a wonderful evening with a lot of energy.
The best part was that my students won trophies and awards and the community supported their first annual Pelopheia 2014. Congratulations to the students and to the organizers. Bravo SAS!
