What I want to show you is this....but this is the real story!
So, today is just about any Sunday on the island of Lesvos, family time and a time to reflect and have a meal or coffee with a friend. The rain has stopped pouring kareglas (chairs) and it's time to step out and smell the roses or Spring time. My friend, Carolina called and we decided at the last minute to go to our place for the moment - Petri. We meet and as decided earlier on the phone we take a walk. It's not the walk that I have planned but what happens. As we walk down the road filled with water and mud there is a place where the holding wall or terrace has just given out from the amount of water that has recently come down the mountain. We notice it and continue on. But, my mind and thoughts keep coming back to the crumbling wall and really that reflects the Greek society that is around me - walls crumbling and water running emotionally down hill!
It's a beautiful level walk done by many walkers and people before and as I smell the fresh air I am reminded of the reason why I live on Lesvos - fresh air, freedom and nature.
Fast forward to a nice hot taverna where we imbibe with some wine, a great meal and talk about what is really happening here on Lesvos. "Pame Paketo" - finding lost relatives, Varoufakis (new economic minister) and the real deal!
Old acquaintances arrive in the taverna - introductions a must.... and still we are back to the real deal. What's going to happen here in Greece?
My friend is a friend of Lesvos, she's an activist, a teacher and friend of the people, the birds, animals and the wetlands! She has been doing great things here for a long long time. And still we talk about what's going to happen with 180 GDP? How does a country we live in deal with a debt so large? I don't know but as a half Greek I just know that I have connections around the world and that maybe just maybe we can right the situation? A big maybe?
So, back to where I'm going with this. We finish our conversation, our beautiful walk, and meal and then I return home. What do I find. But, this......
9 cats.... all looking for a hand out.... I think to myself kind of reflects what is going on with humanity. But then I think not! I thank my neighbor who is the most wonderful woman in the world, who earlier with our coffee/parea exchange had given me some food. I was able to take some bread with some of the okra and potato juice and FEED THE CATS. And also have enough to feed myself. So, my friends who read this blog what's going on with humanity in Greece~ just look at the Cats! Let's start with the cats and move onto the real issues and let me tell you there are many! Help where you can and educate yourselves as to what is going on in the world because it's not just on the surface but deep down and it will begin to surface! And it's not just the cats that are looking for a hand out~ Maybe just maybe the country will adjust? Tha thoume! - which in Greek means "we'll see!"
